Kasungu District: Tasintha Project
The Tasintha is a three-year project for the Jesuit Centre for Ecology and Development (JCED) designed to contribute to JCED's vision of establishing a society where local communities promote environmental integrity; and poor and marginalized households have descent livelihoods (JCED's Strategic Plan, 2018 - 2023). The overall objective of the project is to move the small-scale farmers and their families in Building resilience of farming communities in Kasungu, Malawi, to the impacts of climate change in Kasungu District, Malawi to a productive and resilient society through increased livelihoods opportunities, enhanced food security and improved nutrition, and improved green and climate resilient farming practices. The “Tasintha project” aims to promote environmental sustainability of low-income rural communities in Kasungu District through communities’ participation in Climate Smart Agriculture, afforestation with exotic fast-growing trees, fruit trees, nitrogen-fixing trees, use of energy efficient stoves and participation of farmers in Village Savings and Loans (VSL) schemes from which they will be able acquire loans to start small and medium scale businesses.

The Microgasifier Technology Project
JCED is implementing a project in TA Kaomba aimed at Empowering rural households in Kasungu District, Malawi, to access clean energy sources through Microgasifier technology. The goal of the project is to move the rural households in Kasungu to become energy secure primarily for household cooking and heating, lighting their homes, and charging mobile phones. The project interventions will engineer a shift from "business as usual" scenario of using wood-fuel primarily for household cooking and heating to a clean heat energy source from Microgasifier cookstoves.
